Many people who come on to our\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hongkongfoodietours.com\/tours\/central-sheung-wan-foodie-tour\/\">Central &amp; Sheung Wan Foodie Tour<\/a>\u00a0ask us where else they should go, or what other off-the-beaten path activities they should do during their stay. For those who would like to experience the real Hong Kong, we\u2019d highly recommend a one-day adventure in the New Territories to immerse yourself in the rich heritage of Hong Kong. The hike out of the city centre is worth it as there are abundant opportunities to sample truly local dishes offered by the diverse eateries, so Foodie travellers should definitely hop onto the MTR north bound.<\/p>\n<p>Starting off in Tai Wai, just north of Kowloon, it\u2019s great to spend some time exploring the remnants of various Walled Villages. When it\u2019s time for lunch, we have two suggestions for you. The gastronomically adventurous should try\u00a0<em><strong>roast baby pigeons<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0at\u00a0<strong>Fung Lum Restaurant<\/strong>,\u00a0just across the street from the Tai Wai MTR Station. Dry roasted to perfection, these pigeons are served hot with crispy skin and juicy meat. Pigeons taste a bit like duck and can be dipped into accompanying dipping salt or Worcestershire sauce. I prefer to savor the pigeons in their natural flavor. Don\u2019t be shy, forget your chopsticks, just use your hands. At Fung Lum, I\u2019d also suggest ordering the\u00a0<em><strong>pea pods with garlic<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0as well as\u00a0<em><strong>salt and pepper prawns<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<br \/> \n<div id=\"attachment_1525\" style=\"width: 592px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/beta.hongkongfoodietours.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/IMG_394631.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1525\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1525     \" title=\"Roasted Pigeons\" src=\"http:\/\/beta.hongkongfoodietours.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/IMG_394631.jpg\" alt=\"Roasted Pigeons\" width=\"582\" height=\"437\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1525\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Roasted Pigeons<\/p><\/div>\n<br \/> \n<p>If you are seeking more familiar tastes, try Xin Dau Ji, a classic Cantonese-styled restaurant renowned for its succulent\u00a0<em><strong>roast suckling pigs<\/strong><\/em>. Other favorites include\u00a0<em><strong>sweet and sour pork<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em><strong>garoupa in sweet corn sauce<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<div>After lunch, before hopping onto the train again for further exploration, how about dessert? Tucked in a small shop just a few blocks away from Fung Lum or Xin Dau Ji,\u00a0<strong>Friends Dessert\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0extensive menu includes many western desserts such as chocolate lava cake, apple crumble and souffle. Their best, however, are the classic Hong Kong-styled \u201csweet soup\u201d such as almond soup or black sesame soup. Our favorite is its\u00a0<em><strong>home-made cashew soup<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0and those with a few calories to spare can also add\u00a0<em><strong>glutinous rice balls filled with black sesame<\/strong><\/em>.<\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_1500\" style=\"width: 602px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/beta.hongkongfoodietours.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/IMG_39652.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1500\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1500     \" title=\"Cashew Soup with Glutinuous Balls\" src=\"http:\/\/beta.hongkongfoodietours.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/IMG_39652.jpg\" alt=\"Cashew Soup with Glutinuous Balls\" width=\"592\" height=\"444\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1500\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cashew Soup with Glutinuous Balls<\/p><\/div>\n<br \/> \n<p>With full bellies, we suggest taking the MTR further north to Fanling. This area has witnessed massive transformation over the last few decades. It was not so long ago that cows still grazed grass here but has now developed into one of many satellite towns in the New Territories. By following a path leading from the MTR station, you quickly arrive at one of Hong Kong\u2019s local apiaries,\u00a0<strong>Po Sang Yuen Bee Farm<\/strong>. With more than 80 years of history, it produces various types of honey which are all natural without preservatives. If you\u2019re a bit thirsty after hiking around the area, try a refreshing glass of\u00a0<em><strong>honey served with a slice of lemon<\/strong><\/em>. It will rejuvenate you. Behind the little tasting area, up on the slope sits the bee farm itself. One such group of dai pai dongs can be found in Fo Tan. Nestled among industrial buildings, some of which have recently been converted to art galleries, these dai pai dongs are famous for their\u00a0<em><strong>chicken congee<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0<strong>Chung Chung Food Shop<\/strong>\u00a0is one such stall. Alternatively, get off at Shatin station and take a short bus or taxi ride to Wo Che and look for\u00a0<strong>Chan Kun Kee<\/strong>. Originally catering to residents at the government-subsidized Wo Che Housing Estate, these dai pai dongs now attract foodies from around Hong Kong. Whether at Fo Tan or Wo Che, try the\u00a0<em><strong>clams stir fried in black bean sauce<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em><strong>oyster \u201ccake\u201d<\/strong><\/em>. These are just a few of their signature dishes. Pretty much you name it, they can make it. Local favorites include\u00a0<em><strong>shrimp with scrambled eggs<\/strong><\/em>, or\u00a0<em><strong>beef spare ribs in black pepper sauce<\/strong><\/em>. Most of these dai pai dongs, especially the ones in Fo Tan, are open till late into the night.<\/p>\n<p>Hong Kong is truly a gastronomical paradise.
